Did you know that all tequila is not created equally? Even some 100% Agave tequilas have what we, in the industry call "additives". Let's break it down:
According to the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT), tequila producers can legally add up to 1% of four types of additives without disclosing them to consumers:
1. Caramel coloring: Darkens the tint
2. Oak extract: Adds a barrel-aged taste and aroma
3. Glycerin: Improves smoothness and is heavier than unadulterated tequila, so you can tell if it's been added by watching how the liquid runs down the side of the glass
4. Sugar-based syrups: Also known as jarabes, these can add sweetness and flavor essences
Why is this important to you?
Producers can use these additives to create consistency, hide defects, or evoke barrel aging. However, some say that additives can have negative effects, such as:
Lack of transparency: Consumers may not know if their tequila contains additives
Covering up defects: Brands may use additives to hide low-quality products
Altering the taste: Additives can create a standard that's different from the authentic taste of Tequila
Enter the Additive Free Alliance
The Additive Free Alliance (AFA) is a coalition of tequila brands, retailers, consumers, and producers of other agave-based products who are dedicated to processes that do not use additives.
Since industry regulations do not require tequila producers to disclose whether or not they use additives, the AFA has its own independent, third -party process for identifying and listing additive free brands. This is for the benefit of consumers, who have a growing interest in what they consume.
All tequila on TequilaAF.com labeled as Additive Free are either producer self-proclaimed or AFA approved additive free.
